Some foods that are widely consumed by humans are potentially dangerous to man’s best friend. Find out what to not feed your dog in order to be safe:
- Alcohol: Alcohol has the same effect on the liver and brain of a dog that it has on humans. However, it takes a lot less to hurt your dog. A small amount of beer, drink, wine, or alcohol can cause a serious problem. It may cause vomiting, diarrhea, coordination problems, breathing problems, coma or even death.
- Products containing xylitol: Caramel, chewing gum and other diet foods contain xylitol which can cause a fall in blood sugar in the dog and liver failure.
- Bacon and fat: High fat foods like bacon, ham or meats can cause pancreatitis in dogs.
- Salted foods (salt in general): Salt can cause poisoning.
- Onions and garlic: They can kill their red blood cells, causing anemia.
- Raw meats, fish and eggs: Raw eggs may contain salmonella or e.Coli as well as an enzyme that can cause skin problems to your dog. They may also contain bacteria that can lead to food poisoning and raw fish may hide parasites that cause fatal illnesses. It is important that they are cooked before being consumed by the dog.
- Avocados: Large amount is poisonous for dogs.
- Coffee, Tea and Caffeine Generally: It can be fatal.
- Grapes and raisins: Can cause kidney failure in dogs.

- Macadamia nuts: Even a small amount can make a dog sick.
- Chocolate: It contains theobromine which is not harmful to humans, but is toxic to dogs and is present in all chocolate (even in white), with dark chocolate containing the largest amounts. Chocolate can cause vomiting and diarrhea. It can also cause heart problems, tremors, seizures, and death.
- Peaches and Plums: The peach and plum pits can block their intestines. Pits also contain cyanide, which is poisonous to humans and dogs. We know not to eat it, but a dog does not.
- Sugar: Too much sugar can do the same thing to dogs as it does to people. It can make your dog overweight and cause problems with his teeth. It can even lead to diabetes.
- Baking powder and baking soda: They are both very toxic.
