The largest muscle in the human body in volume is located in the pelvic region and is the gluteus maximum muscle. Its thick fleshy mass, in a quadrilateral shape, forms the prominence of the buttocks.
This muscle, along with the other gluteal muscles, serves many important functions. It stabilizes the pelvis and lower back, allowing an upright posture. It also has an important role in the hip and thigh movements, and is a key factor in powering walking, climbing and running. In the human body, there is a pair of the gluteal muscle group (which includes gluteus maximum, medius and minimum), one on the right and one on the left side.
